French fishermen threatened to ruin Christmas for Britons as they blocked Europe-U.K. trade routes on Saturday over an escalating row over licenses to fish in British waters.
“Believe me, the English will not have a magical Christmas because I think we will ruin the party,” said one fisherman, who said he expects blockages will continue until at least Dec. 10.
Fishing rights plagued Brexit talks for years because of the political significance for President Emmanuel Macron in France and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Britain and the European Union agreed to set up a licensing system to grant fishing vessels access to each other’s waters, but France says it has not been given the full number it is due. Britain says only those lacking correct documentation have been denied licenses.
