France and Britain deployed Navy vessels to the waters off the Channel island of Jersey on Thursday as a dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated.

On Thursday, a flotilla of fishing boats sailed into Jersey’s main harbour to protest what they claim are unfair licensing practices by the local government.

French fishers claim they are being unfairly deprived of access to rich fishing ground off the coast of Jersey, a self-governing British Crown dependency.

Jersey officials claim they are following the rules for issuing licenses laid out in Britain’s post-Brexit deal with the European Union.

France, however, is angry at what it has called unilaterally imposed conditions, including a limit on the time French fishing vessels are allowed to spend in Jersey waters.
