France: Best to postpone King's trip 'in case it goes wrong'

The King's first state visit of his reign has been postponed after widespread unrest in France erupted into violence over President Emmanuel Macron's retirement age reforms.

Sir Peter Westmacott, a former British Ambassador to France, has said that "it's a reality check of what's going on in the streets of France at a time when people are feeling very angry."

He added that presidential staff had likely thought that "there's too much risk involved" and "we don't want it to go wrong".
