Prominent US attorney Alan Dershowitz says the indictment brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg against Donald Trump is absurd and politically motivated.
The longtime Harvard law professor who defended Trump in his first impeachment says he does not support the former president politically and would not vote for him.
But Dershowitz said the US legal system, with elected prosecutors and judges, means Trump has no chance of a fair trial in Manhattan.
Dershowitz told DW's Tim Sebastian some of the other pending legal cases against Trump — including the Fulton County, Georgia investigation for interference in the November 2020 election for Trump's call to state authorities to "find" votes for him, and January 6 riot violence case — also had weak points.
The Mar-a-Lago classified documents may be the strongest legally, Dershowitz said, but would be hard to prosecute because of similar allegations against President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence.
