Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at age 95, the Vatican announced on Saturday.

His funeral will be held in St. Peter's Square on Jan. 5 and will be presided over by Pope Francis, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Pope Francis disclosed that his predecessor was "very sick." Bruni said he had received his last rites, called "the anointing of the sick," on Wednesday.

Faithful reacted to the news of the pope emeritus' death, from Munich to Vatican City.

"For us, he was a point of reference. He is someone who accompanied us with his friendship and with his great personality. We are all very sorry," Federico Picetto said, on the streets of Munich.

In Vatican City, Rome resident Maria Totaro said of the former pope, "Now we will only have one pope. I must say that Pope Ratzinger was a charismatic pope, humble but above all a great theologian."
