Pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95. Benedict became the first leader of the Catholic Church to stand down in over 600 years in 2013, citing old age and poor health.

Following his papacy, he led a quiet life in Vatican City as ‘pope emeritus’.

In early 2022, he was widely criticised after a report found he failed to take action against four priests accused of child sexual abuse as Archbishop of Munich.

He later admitted he had mistakenly provided false information to the enquiry.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: "I am saddened to learn of the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI."

"He was a great theologian whose UK visit in 2010 was an historic moment for both Catholics and non-Catholics throughout our country.
