Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Monday that his government would invest $500,000 in the Helmets to Hardhats program, which helps veterans find jobs in the construction industry. Ford said the funding would help veterans contribute to the province’s economy as it recovers from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The premier was also questioned about surging COVID-19 cases in the province and about what he would say to epidemiologists who have suggested he hasn’t done enough to bring the numbers under control, which could make another lockdown inevitable.

Ford said in response that he “respects all the doctors” and epidemiologists, but is “not going to get in to one doctor versus another.” He said he has to respect the opinions of the doctors he works with most closely.

Ontario reported 1,242 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the second-highest single-day increase for the province, bringing the provincial total to 85,395. Monday was also the fourth straight day that daily case counts have exceeded 1,000.
