Passenger plane incidents have hit headlines again. Yesterday, a Virgin Australia, Melbourne-bound flight was diverted to Invercargill after an engine caught alight.

A passenger on board told 1News there was "a lot of panic" when the plane first took off and they saw flames coming from the engine, but things "calmed down" after that.

1News' Jared McCulloch has the latest from New Zealand's Invercargill Airport. Later, Keith Tonkin from Aviation Projects Australia told Breakfast flames from engine "not normal".
