More than five million people worldwide are now believed to have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And, in the prosperous West, many countries are looking forward to the coming winter with apprehension.
Others, though, have been celebrating the lifting of restrictions imposed on people’s personal freedoms. Meanwhile, though, intensive care units are again bracing for a surge in patients. And: in large parts of the Global South, things are worse, much worse, with only about five per cent of people fully vaccinated.
