Five Italian climbers were still missing 48 hours after the deadly collapse of part of a mountain glacier in the Alps, in a tragedy that is being blamed on rising temperatures.

Maurizio Fugatti, president of the Trento region, confirmed the death toll and the number of missing at a news conference on Tuesday evening.

At least seven people are known to have been killed in the avalanche on Sunday on the Marmolada, which at more than 3,300 metres is the highest peak in the Dolomites, a range in the eastern Italian Alps straddling the regions of Trento and Veneto.

“It was really a sudden surprise to see that this glacier so heavily impacted by climate change has reacted in such an unpredictable and deep way," said Giovanni Baccolo, an environmental scientist and glaciologist at Milan-Bicocca University, noting that glaciers like Marmolada are considered 'placid', and are expected to just retreat.

Head of the local alpine rescue team and one of the first to arrive on the scene, Stefano Coter, described what he saw as a “disaster.”

Hikers in the Dolomites said they were frightened after the glacier collapse and chose not to hike near it.
