At least seven people are dead and a dozen hikers are still missing after a deadly avalanche of snow, ice and rocks on the Marmolada glacier in the Dolomite region of the Italian Alps.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi met with families of the dead on Monday and expressed “the most sincere, affectionate and heartfelt closeness to the families.”

Draghi blamed the avalanche on climate change, adding that what happened “certainly depends on environmental deterioration and the climate situation.”

Marmolada glacier has been shrinking for decades and scientists at the National Research Council have said it won’t exist in 25-30 years.
