Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Monday announced the details of an aid package for Air Canada, which she said includes $4 billion in repayable loans to the airline and an equity investment of $500 million.

Freeland said the financial support would have “strict conditions” attached, including the resumption of suspended service to regional communities, refunds for “pandemic-related cancellations,” and the protection of workers’ jobs, pensions and collective agreements. Air Canada will also have to provide “climate-related discosures.”

She added that Air Canada and all other airlines would be eligible for a “voucher refund facility”, or a loan to help airlines refund customers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Air Canada, she said, would receive an additional $1.4 billion loan for this purpose, in addition to the relief package outlined earlier.
