California's power grid urged customers to conserve energy for a ninth day in a row on Thursday, as homes and businesses crank up their air conditioners to escape a brutal heat wave lingering over the drought-stricken region since the start of September.

The state has been suffering from high temperatures and wildfires throughout the summer.

The Mill Fire in Northern California hasn’t expanded since Saturday morning, covering about 17 square kilometres with 25 per cent containment, according to Cal Fire. However, it killed two people on Sunday, said Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue.

Evacuation orders were also in place in the southern part of the state, near Los Angeles as firefighters worked to contain the Fairview Fire.

Global’s Reggie Cecchini reports.
