At least four people are dead after a strong explosion hit a well-known hotel in downtown Havana, Cuba on Friday, tearing a gash several floors high into the side of the building.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the explosion at the Hotel Saratoga had not been caused by a bomb, but instead was most likely caused by a gas leak.

The neo-classical hotel was a go-to location for government officials and visiting celebrities, though it had lost some of its allure in recent years with the opening of several new hotels in the Cuban capital.

It was due for a post-pandemic reopening in four days.
