More than one billion COVID-19 vaccines produced in the European Union (EU) have been exported to over 150 countries since December 2020, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday.

"We have said that at least every second vaccine produced in the European Union will go abroad and we have reached that with this important milestone of exporting one billion vaccines to the world, while also delivering in parallel to the European citizens," von der Leyen said in a speech.

Vaccines exported or donated by the EU to poorer nations are a small portion of total exports, but the EU plans to boost its donations in the coming months with the goal of distributing at least 500 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to the most vulnerable countries, von der Leyen added.

Von der Leyen said she would push for the issue of exporting doses to poorer countries to be discussed at the G20 summit in Rome next week.
