Speaking at the outset of a global vaccine summit he convened, U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday his government had purchased another half a billion Pfizer COVID-19 shots to donate to low and middle-income countries, in addition to the 500 million previously announced.

In a press briefing following the announcement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the Biden administration was working with other countries, such as South Africa to increase vaccine production in those countries. She also called on other developed countries to do more to step up their own donations to other countries.

Additionally, Psaki said prior COVID-19 vaccine donations had been difficult because of regulatory hurdles, but said the U.S. has been able to work through these hurdles in many countries, which should make it easier “moving forward.”
