It was "essential" the US and UK hit back at the Houthis, the former US ambassador to NATO has told Sky's Sophy Ridge.

Kurt Volker said the reason why the attacks by the Houthis on international shipping took place was because "they believed there would be no response".

He went on to say, "we have to re-establish a sense of deterrence against this kind of behaviour".
