British and French troops took part in a landmark Changing of the Guard ceremony outside of London's Buckingham Palace, as well as the Élysée Palace in Paris, to mark the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale on Monday.
The Entente Cordiale, dating back to 1904, put a stop to centuries of military rivalries between France and Britain to see the two European powers fight on the same side during two world wars.
In London, Britain's Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie, inspected guardsmen from the British F Company Scots Guards as well as the French Gendarmerie’s Garde Républicaine while the Band of the Grenadier Guards performed.
In Paris, 16 members of Britain's Number 7 company Coldstream guards marched from the British consulate to the Élysée Palace on Faubourg St. Honore street where they were relieved by French Republican guards, as French President Emmanuel Macron watched alongside British ambassador to France, Menna Rawlings.
Both ceremonies, a first in each country, celebrate more than a century of diplomatic relations and are part of a series of planned events— including military land and air shows.
