Three organizers of the “Freedom Convoy’‘ protests in Ottawa are to appear Thursday at the public inquiry into the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act during the trucker protests earlier this year.

Benjamin Dichter, James Bauder and Tamara Lich will testify at the Public Order Emergency Commission, which is examining the use of the emergency powers in mid-February to clear what had become a weeks-long occupation of downtown Ottawa.

Lich specifically was responsible for creating one of the initial online fundraisers and soon became one of the movement's most recognizable leaders.

On Wednesday, "Freedom Convoy" organizer and leader Pat King testified that the COVID-19 vaccine mandates for truckers were seen as a "direct attack on the Canadian economy" because they are the "backbone" of the economy. He went on to explain how he got involved in the convoy and said the goal was to "exercise your voice and be heard" about concerns "with the way things are being controlled."

Keith Wilson, a lawyer representing some organizers of the "Freedom Convoy," said police were regularly leaking operational plans and other information to protesters in Ottawa during last winter's demonstration. He added members of the Ottawa police, Ontario Provincial Police and RCMP all leaked information to protesters.

The inquiry is investigating the events leading up to the federal government’s emergency declaration Feb. 14, weeks into demonstrations that had gridlocked downtown Ottawa and spilled into border blockades elsewhere.
