The Caribbean island country of Barbados is set to hold commemorative ceremonies to mark Emancipation Day.
On August 1, 1834, Britain passed the Slavery Abolition Act outlawing the trade of human beings as property.
This year, in Barbados, the celebration of emancipation holds a unique significance as the country takes a leading role in advancing the global movement for slavery reparations.

Al Jazeera's Manuel Rapalo reports from Bridgetown, Barbados.
