The video, captured by the Saildrone Explorer SD 1045’s onboard camera, is said to be the first of its kind, as it takes the viewer into the center of a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.
The 23-foot crewless vessel managed to pierce the eyewall of Hurricane Sam, which peaked as a Category 4 storm, as waves stood at some 50 feet and winds topped 120mph.
Saildrone founder and CEO Richard Jenkins said, ‘We are proud to have engineered a vehicle capable of operating in the most extreme weather conditions on Earth.’
