Rights to explore for oil in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are up for auction with potentially devastating impacts for a critical ecosystem and the communities that depend on it.
The government plans to sell 27 so-called blocks to oil companies for development. They sit in the world’s second largest rainforest, and some overlap with nature reserves.

Al Jazeera's team travelled up the Congo River from Mbandaka to meet the people who live there.
This is the first of four reports from Al Jazeera's environment editor, Nick Clark, on the government's plans to exploit natural resources to lift people out of poverty.
