On day three of ex-cop Derek Chauvin's murder trial, Cup Foods cashier Christopher Martin testified that he thought George Floyd was under the influence the day of his death, and he also thought Floyd had paid for a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Martin said he felt "disbelief and guilt" for taking the bill that would lead to Floyd's deadly arrest.

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. after the officer knelt on his neck for an extended period during an arrest. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted on the most serious charge.

During testimony, Martin describes how he thought the bill Floyd passed to him was fake. “When I um saw the bill, I noticed that it had a blue pigment to it, kind of how a $100 will have and I found that odd, so I assumed that it was fake,” Martin testified.

But he said he accepted it, despite believing the amount would be taken out of his paycheque by his employer, because he didn’t think Floyd knew it was counterfeit and “I thought I’d be doing him a favour.”

Martin said that when Floyd was inside the store buying cigarettes, he spoke so slowly “it would appear that he was high.” But he described Floyd as friendly and talkative.
