December 16, 2021: 'Dust Bowl' winds, Democrats at odds over Biden bill, $1.75 trillion, Australia jumping castle accident, Omicron, Ghislaine Maxwell
1. Less than a week after a swarm of powerful tornadoes devastated Kentucky and four other states, a freakish wind storm brought "Dust Bowl" conditions and gusts of more than 100 mph (161 kph) to parts of the Great Plains and Upper Midwest, meteorologists said.
2. U.S. Senate Democrats were struggling to find a path forward on President Joe Biden's $1.75 trillion domestic investment bill, with moderate Joe Manchin objecting to parts of the program, a person familiar with their negotiations said.
3. Four children were killed and several more badly injured in Australia after strong winds lifted an inflated jumping castle into the air during end-of-year school celebrations, causing them to fall 10 metres (33 feet), authorities said, prompting an outpouring of grief.
4. Compared to the earlier Delta variant, Omicron multiplies itself 70 times more quickly in tissues that line airway passages, which may facilitate person-to-person spread, researchers said.
5. Ghislaine Maxwell's defense is set to start making its case in the British socialite's sex abuse trial, after the jury heard testimony from four women who said she groomed them for abuse by Jeffrey Epstein when they were teenagers.
