December 14, 2021: Kentucky tornadoes, contempt charge Meadows, Amazon warehouse fatal collapse, Omicron, debt limit vote
1. The barrage of tornadoes that tore through six states killed at least 74 people in Kentucky, officials said, as those fortunate enough to survive unscathed opened their doors to victims whose homes were destroyed, and hundreds of the suddenly homeless took refuge in shelters.
2. The U.S. congressional committee probing the deadly Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol voted unanimously to seek "contempt of Congress" charges against Mark Meadows, who served as White House chief of staff to former President Donald Trump.
3. The U.S. workplace safety watchdog is investigating the circumstances around the collapse during Friday night's storm of an Amazon.com building in Illinois in which six workers died, an official at the U.S. Department of Labor said.
4. British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said that there were 10 people in hospital with Omicron.
5. The U.S. Senate will vote to raise the federal government's $28.9 trillion limit debt limit, avoiding an unprecedented default as soon as later this month, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.
