Cryopreserving organs: University of Alberta scientists search for ways to revive life-saving cells

There have been some amazing advances in cell-based medicine over the past decades yet freezing them without damaging them remains a big problem. Now, University of Alberta researchers are using trees, frogs and fish in winter to solve that problem.

“Fish actually live in an environment where their body fluids should freeze because it’s below zero, but they don’t. And that’s because they have these ice blockers or ice inhibitors” said Dr. Jason Acker, a professor at the University of Alberta.

As Su-Ling Goh reports, the U of A team hopes their cryogenics freezing discovery could help save millions of lives each year.
