Fecal microbial transplant: What is it and how it can it be life-saving

You may have heard of becoming a blood or organ donor, but have you heard of donating your personal waste? A fecal microbial transplant, or FMT, can be life-saving for some people.

The digestive system is home to thousands of good bacteria, but there are cases where the bad — such as one called clostridioides difficile, or C. difficile — and infection that can become very severe for some patients.

One of the best options to combating C. difficile is an FMT in which stool from a healthy donor is put into an infected patient to help restore good bacteria.

But as Jamie Mauracher reports, the COVID-19 pandemic has made accessing the treatment more difficult.
