Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet ministers were heckled on Monday during Memorial Day ceremonies held to remember soldiers and civilians who have died since the latest wave of the Israel-Hamas conflict that began on Oct. 7, 2023.
“Garbage!” one audience member yelled, after Netanyahu honoured fallen Israelis. “There is nothing to respect. He killed my children,” the man added as the Prime Minister left the Jerusalem stage.
Israel’s National Security and Defence ministers were also yelled at and called “criminals” by audience members at separate events in Ashdod and Tel Aviv.
The heckling comes just over seven months since Hamas militants attacked and killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel and took some 250 hostages. Since then, Netanyahu vowed to destroy the militant group — resulting in unwavering violence in Gaza and an ongoing conflict.
Netanyahu and other Israeli feds have been blamed for security failures that allowed Hamas to overwhelm Israel’s defences around Gaza on Oct. 7, turning many against them. Since Israel’s war on Hamas began, more than 36,000 people have been killed in the Middle Eastern region.
