World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday called on countries to join the global campaign to vaccinate 70 per cent of every country’s population by the mid of the year.

He said that vaccine equity was the biggest failure of the past two years.

“Booster after booster in a small number of countries will not end the pandemic while billions remain completely unprotected,” he said.

The world has reported the highest number ever of COVID-19 vases over the past week, but the organization says the numbers are certainly an underestimate due to backlogs, personal tests that are not reported, and burdened surveillance systems that miss cases.

The director-general urged people not to label the Omicron variant as “mild” just because it appears to be less severe compared to the Delta variant.

He cautioned people should not stop relying on vaccinations to stop practicing distancing and hygiene measures in the flight against Omicron.
