Speaking on Wednesday after a special session of the World Health Assembly, World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said member-states have agreed to draft a pandemic accord, which will cover prevention, preparedness and response.

He said it will also help foster cooperation between countries.

“And so today, the nations of the world have made a strong statement that health security is too important to leave to chance or good will, or shifting political currents or vested interests,” he said.

Tedros also criticized some countries’ decision to introduce travel bans against South Africa and Botswana, saying such blanket bans punish countries for “doing the right thing.”
