As Canadians head into the holiday season, infectious diseases specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch joined Global News on Monday to talk about what people should consider before they decide to attend possible gatherings.

Asked about when the best time to take a COVID-19 rapid antigen test, Bogoch said if everyone takes one a short time before getting together, there is an "added layer" of protection, and while not perfect, it still is good to have.

He also spoke about a "personal risk assessment" being suggested by some experts and officials to consider before going to events. Bogoch said it's "pretty individual," as some people may be more vulnerable to infection or live with someone who has a higher risk. He said it doesn't necessarily mean cancelling your holiday gathering but to be cognizant of who is there and keep your gatherings small.

He also touched on Ontario's new restrictions, saying given there is still a "lot of unknowns" about the Omicron variant, action needed to be taken. He said even if a small percentage need hospitalization and ICU care, with cases surpassing 4,000 on Sunday, the number of people needing health-care assistance could stretch resources.
