The number of Omicron COVID-19 infections in Thailand had tripled by Wednesday to a total of 2,338 cases, compared to 740 in the period from Nov. 1-Dec. 29 of last year, government data showed. Half of those infections were from foreign arrivals.

The country reported 3,899 new infections overall on Wednesday – a rise from about 2,600 daily cases at the end of 2021.

Chris Potranandana, the head of a volunteer group providing free COVID-19 testing in Bangkok, said he feared a possible wave of new infections.

“Right now, the daily infection rate is around 3,000 people a day, but I am sure that yesterday there be (was) much more than that,” he said, adding that he believed "the real number would be two or three times higher than that."

There have been 2.2 million COVID-19 infections and nearly 22,000 fatalities since the pandemic began. Sumanee Watcharasin, a spokeswoman for the country's coronavirus taskforce, said the government will decide on new public health measures on Friday.
