Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show there has been a record 314,000 redundancies, which were reported leading up to September, as coronavirus took a further toll on jobs.

The rate of unemployment in the three months to September has risen to 4.8%, which is up from 4.5% the previous quarter.

The ONS suggested that even as the wider economy was bouncing back from the pandemic-driven recession at the start of the year, the jobs crisis worsened.
