German interim chancellor Angela Merkel and her successor Olaf Scholz announced new COVID-19 measures for the country that would see a focus on unvaccinated individuals, barring them from access to all but the most essential businesses such as grocery stores and pharmacies.

Making vaccinations compulsory and restricting the number of people at large events, such as soccer matches, are among measures being discussed by the country's parliament.

In an effort to avoid widespread lockdowns, businesses would remain open for the almost 69 per cent of the population that is fully vaccinated as well as those who have recovered from COVID-19.
