The use of messenger RNA technology (mRNA) in the creation of COVID-19 vaccines have made a considerable impact in the fight against the novel coronavirus, with the first doses being given to people less than a year after the pandemic was declared.

But mRNA technology is not new; not only is it used within our own cells to make proteins, but it has been used in testing against other diseases and viruses like cancer and ebola for well over a decade. And with the success of its use in COVID-19 vaccines, it could mean a breakthrough in how to use it going forward.

As Sean Previl explains, while it doesn't mean a vaccine for something like cancer is coming as quickly as it did for COVID-19, it could still have a big impact on the fight against other diseases and viruses going forward.
