Some 865,000 women in the United States left the workforce in September compared to 216,000 men, according to an analysis of labour department figures carried out by the the National Women's Law Center.

The contrast in numbers underlines that the pandemic has disproportionately affected the female workforce.

One of the main drivers, among others, for what some have dubbed the “shecession” is that women are over-represented in several of the worst-hit industries such as retail, hospitality and childcare.

In this episode of The Stream, we hear the stories of some of those affected.
