World Health Organization director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday said he was encouraged by news earlier in the week that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was 90 per cent effective in Phase 3 clinical trials, but advised the world still "has a long way to go."

Ghebreyesus said that while a vaccine would be a vital tool for controlling the pandemic, the world community cannot "put all its eggs in one basket."

He said that returning to the "status quo" was not an option and investments in public health are not the only thing needed, but that people also need to rethink how they value health.
