The coronavirus crisis in Germany remains severe despite recent positive news of a vaccine, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Nov. 11, adding that the government would have to deal with the pandemic throughout the winter.
"As was the case with the Spanish flu, we now also have to expect that the second wave will be more severe," Merkel said during a video conference with the government's council of economic advisers.
“Even if there is good news now on vaccines being developed it won't have any significant impact this winter, so we have to continue with our precautionary measures,” she added.
Meanwhile, a Red Cross clinic in Berlin is hoping for a vaccine while fearing their intensive care isolation ward might not be able to cope with COVID-19 cases.
Bernd Schmidt, a chief physician at the clinic's internal medicine and pneumology ward said two wards for COVID-19 patients were "pretty much at full capacity and where we are barely able to do our job."
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 18,487 to 705,687, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Nov. 11.
