Some of the United States' top health-care officials received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, alongside doctors and nurses at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in a public bid to drum up public support for inoculations on Tuesday.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the institute, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar received their COVID-19 vaccines in Washington, D.C.

Fauci said he considers it an "honour" to be part of the vaccination process.

"What we're seeing now is the culmination of years of research, which have led to a phenomenon that has truly been unprecedented. And that is to go from the realization that we're dealing with a new pathogen, a virus that was described in January of this year, to less than one year later, to have vaccines that are going into the arms of so many people, including myself," he said.
