New Zealand Labour Leader Chris Hipkins was sworn in on Wednesday by Gov. Gen. Cindy Kiro as the country's prime minister in a formal ceremony, following the resignation of outgoing prime minister Jacinda Ardern last week.
The Labour party elected the former COVID-19 response and police minister to lead the party and country on Sunday during a caucus meeting. It came after Ardern announced her resignation, saying she had "no more in the tank" to lead.
Alongside Hipkins, Carmel Sepuloni was sworn in as his deputy prime minister, becoming the first person of Pacific Islander descent to hold the role. Hipkins is expected to hold his first cabinet meeting later Wednesday.
