Current Minister of Police Chris Hipkins is set to become New Zealand's next prime minister, following Jacinda Ardern's decision to resign.

Hipkins must still garner an endorsement Sunday from his Labour Party colleagues, but as he is the only candidate running to replace Ardern, that is a formality at this stage. An official transfer of power will come in the days to follow.

"I’m really humbled and really proud to be taking this on. It is the biggest responsibility and the biggest privilege of my life," Hipkins told reporters Saturday morning.

Residents of Auckland reacted to the news with mixed, albeit fairly positive, reviews with some believing Hipkins has the experience and credibility to face off against the National Party - Labour's main electoral rivals - in the next election.
