China has spent more than $200bn bailing out struggling countries as part of President Xi Jinping's signature Belt and Road Initiative.
That is according to a new study into Chinese lending programmes, which highlights the risks for debtors.
The Belt and Road Initiative is expected to continue growing and as it does, it is likely to face increased international scrutiny.
