China’s national space agency says its Chang’e-5 return capsule carrying rock and soil from the moon landed safely in snow-covered grasslands of the country’s Inner Mongolia region in the early hours of Dec. 17.

The return probe landed in the Siziwang banner after a 23-day mission to the moon, during which Chang’e-5 retrieved 2 kg (4.4 lbs) of lunar rock and soil – the first moon samples collected since 1976 – according to the China National Space Administration (CSNA).

The mission’s success was lauded by President Xi Jinping and other Chinese officials as the start of a new era in Chinese space exploration, state-owned news agency Xinhua reported.

The Chang’e-5 probe, comprised of a lander, an ascender, an orbiter, and a returner, was launched on Nov.24 and landed on the moon on Dec. 1.
