The maneuver of a Chinese warship in the Taiwan Strait during an encounter with a U.S. destroyer was completely reasonable, legal, professional and "safe," a spokesperson at China's foreign ministry said at a press conference on Monday in Beijing.

The U.S. Navy released a video on June 4 of what it called an "unsafe interaction" in the Taiwan Strait, in which a Chinese warship crossed in front of a U.S. destroyer, the USS Chung-Hoon, in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday. Global News captured the incident while on board the HMCS Montreal — a Canadian Navy ship.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the U.S. "caused trouble and provocation in the first place," while China acted in a law-abiding manner.

The U.S. military said the Chung-Hoon and Canada's HSMC Montreal, a frigate, were conducting a "routine" transit of the strait when the Chinese ship cut in front of the U.S. vessel, coming within 137 metres.
