China's foreign ministry on Wednesday condemned "discriminatory practices," as more countries announced further COVID-19 restrictions for travellers coming from China.

Authorities around the world are imposing or considering curbs on travellers from China as COVID-19 cases there surge following its relaxation of zero-COVID rules. China has rejected criticism of its COVID data.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that such COVID curbs should be "scientific and appropriate."

The United States, France, South Korea, Canada and the U.K. are among the countries that have already announced restrictions. On Wednesday, Japan said it would toughen measures for travellers from China, requiring pre-arrival and on-arrival negative COVID tests.

Meanwhile, China reported five new COVID-19 deaths on Jan. 3, compared with three a day earlier, bringing the official death toll to 5,258, which is considered very low by global standards. The toll is widely believed to be much higher.
