China arming Russia would be "historic mistake," NATO chief warns

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned on Wednesday that the possibility of China providing lethal aid to Russia would be a "historic mistake with profound implications."

He said that in addition to refusing to condemn Russia's aggression, China "echoes Russian propaganda" and props up the country's economy. He added both countries are also stepping up joint military activities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Stoltenberg also expressed his concern that Russia was making "empty promises" after it was announced Moscow would deploy tactical and nuclear weapons to Belarus, even after signing an agreement with China that neither country would deploy nuclear weapons outside their borders.

The NATO chief also briefly commented on Ukraine's bid to join the alliance, saying it had to be based on the country being independent and democratic.
