China has not changed its position – neither on Ukraine, nor on Taiwan. And yet, China is trying to win friends. Can mutual trust be established again? China has so far refused to criticize Russia for its war in Ukraine. It remains adamant on the Taiwan issue. This handshake seemed like a gesture to revive diplomacy. Xi Jinping received Blinken personally. But the ties are so fraught that re-establishing stability looks farfetched.
Meanwhile in Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz repeated his appeal to China to use its influence on Russia to help end the war. An appeal that was blatantly ignored. So, today on – To The Point – we are asking: China’s global ambitions: Can the West keep up?
