China has found 183 pieces of debris from the China Eastern Airlines jet that crashed, including engine blades and turbine parts, with most of the wreckage being in an area 30 metres around the main impact point, Chinese officials said on Thursday.
Remains of 21 victims have also been recovered, according to local fire official Zheng Xi, adding that the search area on Thursday was expected to be 1.5 times larger than that on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a rescuer working at the crash site in southern China said on Thursday their search operation has been fraught with difficulties, after two consecutive days of rain thwarting the process.
"The search area is really large, plus the two days of rain has made the road very slippery, we do have some difficulties pushing forward," said a local fire official, Huang Shangwu, adding that having to search slowly and carefully was making his team anxious.
Flight MU5735 was en route from the southwestern city of Kunming to Guangzhou on March 21 with 132 passengers on board when the plane suddenly plunged from cruising altitude. No survivors have been found and experts have said it was all but impossible that anyone could survive such an impact.
