Chile's outgoing president, Sebastian Piñera, announced Tuesday he plans to expedite a same-sex marriage bill that has been stalled for years in the country's Congress.
During a state of the nation address, he said that all people, regardless of sexual orientation, should be able to "live, love and form a family."
There was a measure passed in 2015 to empower couples, including those in same-sex relationships, to register for a Civil Union Agreement that confers some legal benefits, but the universal same-sex marriage bill has yet to be passed despite first being introduced by former president Michelle Bachalet.
