Chile’s former President Sebastian Pinera, a billionaire tycoon who twice held the South American nation’s top job, has died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, his office said in a statement.
It’s believed he was flying himself and three other passengers.
The government has declared two days of national mourning for the 74-year-old who was president twice.
While some Chileans remember him as a leader who improved the economy and led the country during the unprecedented rescue of trapped miners, others call him a murderer and accuse him of human rights violations against demonstrators during his second presidency.
